Must Have Tricks for Your Next Road Trip
As the year begins to warm up it’s the perfect time to start planning your next road trip. Whether it’s a summer vacation trip visiting family, a road trip with girlfriends, or a solo adventure somewhere new taking a road trip can be the best way to explore much of the world.
A road trip is perfect for a weekend getaway or is often a more affordable way to explore a new country. Think about driving along the California Coastline, exploring a few countries in Europe, or even explore the Southern island of New Zealand.
Planning the Trip
You’ll want to start out planning your trip with the basics like where and when you’ll be going. It can be fun to just get in the car and go but there are a few things that will help you make the most out of your next road trip.
Find Your Travel Buddy
First things first, who are you going with? A road trip can be a great way to better get to know a friend or family member. It can also be a chance for them to drive you a little nuts. If you’re looking for a travel buddy don’t forget to sign up for our updates on the Lioness Travel App that will allow you to find the perfect travel companion on your next road trip.
Plan Your Route
There are a few approaches to mapping a route. Do you want to get there fast? Are their major attractions you can’t miss? Is it the scenic drive you’re looking for? Think about what you’re hoping to get out of your next road trip and make sure you and your travel buddy are on the same page as you map your route.
Leave Room For Spontaneity
Figure out how much spontaneity you want on the trip. You might book a few hotels or campsite or you might want to play it by ear. Even if you’re a serious planner make sure to leave some room for a spontaneous side trip or stop every once in a while.
Packing Up the Car
You’ll want to make the most of the space you have for both your destination and the road trip itself. Consider making a list to make sure you don’t forget anything important.
Technology & Chargers
While sometimes it’s nice to get away from the digital world you’ll want to bring along a few piece of technology. You’ll, of course, bring along a smartphone or two, but does your car have a Bluetooth speaker or should you bring one along. Also, make sure to have all the chargers and adapters you need so your map doesn’t disappear when you need it most.
Comfort & A Little Protection
Get cozy! You’re spending a few days in a car and you’ll want to be comfortable. Consider the clothes you’re bringing as well as any pillows, window shades, or other accessories that will keep you comfortable in the car. And don’t forget the sunblock! You might roll down the window and the next thing you know you’ll be sunburnt on one side. Bug spray always helps as well since you won’t know exactly where you’ll be stopping.
Don’t Forget Snacks & Water
A good way to avoid stopping too often and spending too much is bringing along your own water and snacks. You’ll avoid being miles between stops and having a craving or a thirst. Always pack a little more than you think you need just in case.
Saving Along the Way on Your Next Road Trip
In many ways taking a road trip can be a cheaper way to travel but it’s also easy to spend a lot on the road. Check out a few tips on how to save on your next road trip.
Find The Cheaper Gas
Gas can quickly become one of the biggest expenses when you’re on your next road trip. It’s also easy to be stuck needing to fill up and only have one option where prices are inflated. Consider using an app like GasBuddy that allows you to search for gas stations by cost. Plan ahead a little and you can save enough for a splurge somewhere else.
Avoid Rush Hour
To save on gas and time try and avoid rush hour in metropolitan areas. You won’t have to stress out about sitting in traffic and you’ll get better gas mileage. Sometimes it’s unavoidable but think about stopping to check out an attraction or enjoy a meal.
Camp, Stay with Friends or try Airbnb
A great way to save on your next road trip is on accommodations. Consider planning your route around where you have friends’ couches to crash on or look into camping a few nights. Another great way to save is staying at an Airbnb where you can just rent a room and even meet some locals.
A Girlfriends Weekend in San Francisco
A girlfriends getaway is a great way to explore a new city. Get started with a weekend in San Francisco. Whether you’re looking for nights out dancing with the girls, eating your way through a city or exploring outdoor adventures, San Francisco has it all.
Visit San Francisco any time of the year. While the fog may roll in, it’s just as likely to be a beautiful day in January as July. You can pick any weekend of the year or head out for a major event like the annual Bay to Breakers race or Outsidelands music festival.
While a weekend in San Francisco will only give you a taste of all the city has to offer, it’s a great way to explore the city with your girlfriends.
Your Pick Of Boutique Hotels
Stay at one of San Francisco’s boutique hotels. You can book a room in the historic Sir Francis Drake on Union Square. Find the secret room used during prohibition or pop upstairs for a great view, cocktails, and even a drag show.
If you want to get away from the tourist zone, take a look at the newly renovated Hotel Drisco in Pacific Heights. A cute spot worth the splurge that is a short walk from the Presidio and Golden Gate Park.
Get Outdoors in San Francisco
If you love the city but still want to fit in a few outdoor adventures a weekend in San Francisco is exactly what you need. Without leaving the city you have a variety of open spaces and conservation areas to take a hike. Consider heading into the Presidio or around the Golden Gate Park to get into the redwoods. More interested in hiking by the beach? Head over to Fort Funston.

Also, think about getting out on the Bay itself. You can take a ferry boat across to Sausalito or Oakland for a cheap way to get a great view of the Bay. Or sign up for a sailing tour under the Golden Gate Bridge.
Catch A Show
Just about any weekend in San Francisco, you’ll be able to find a show worth seeing. The Fillmore is a favorite spot for concerts. This historic small venue hosts major acts all year round.
If a play or musical is more your style the Orpheum Theatre hosts major Broadway tours. It was the first stop on the Hamilton National Tour, so you’ll want to take a look to see what’s playing for your weekend in San Francisco.
Shop Till You Drop
San Francisco can rival just about any city for shopping. Head down to Union Square to explore all the designer stores. Then wander through neighborhoods like Hayes Valley, the Marina, and Haight-Ashbury for boutique and quirky shops. You’ll find everything from bookshops to resale to music stores.
Also, make sure to visit the Ferry Building, San Francisco’s public market. You’ll find a wide range of local products from cheese (don’t miss Cowgirl Creamery) to soaps to the Book Passage Bookstore. You can spend hours exploring and make sure you go hungry.
Let Your Foodie Out
While the Ferry Building should be on your eating list there is so much to enjoy across San Francisco. If there is any type of food you’ve been craving but can’t find at home you’ll be able to find it here in San Francisco.
Head over to the Mission for some delicious Mexican food. From El Techo, a rooftop bar, to the whole in the wall La Taqueria, argued to have the best burrito in the country.
Visit Little Italy for tasty Italian. Tony’s Pizza is a city favorite. Otherwise, you’ll enjoy just about any spot you wander into in the area.
Brunch is also a big deal in the city. You might have to wait but Outerlands is a delicious spot near the Golden Gate Park.
Explore The City With A Weekend In San Francisco
With so much to offer a weekend in San Francisco is a perfect way to please just about any of your friends. You’ll have a chance to enjoy a bit of everyone’s favorites and even try something a little new. Grab a few of your girlfriends and book a flight to the city by the bay.

Plan Ahead & Think About the Full Picture
Like packing for any other time of the year, don’t just throw in three tops you like and two dresses. Make sure to look at the full picture of what you’re packing and what you need to bring. This helps cut down on the bulk and bringing things you don’t need.

Dresses and shoes are what take up the most space in your suitcase when you’re packing for the summer. So make sure that these are the items you know you’ll wear more than once. Maxi dresses are great for exploring in the day, then add a necklace and they’ll work for a night out. Same with shoes! What sandals can go from day or night? Wedges can be better than heels since they can me more versatile.
Shop With These Summer Travel Style Tips in Mind
These tips are all helpful but first, you have to keep these items in your wardrobe. You don’t have to go out and buy all these summer travel style items for each trip but think about them when you next go shopping and slowly make your wardrobe at home the perfect wardrobe for travel as well.

7 Ways to Avoid Loneliness When Traveling Solo
Solo travel can be a great experience, but no matter who you are you’ll want to connect with people along the way. It depends on your personality, you might get a little lonely or feel disconnected after a day on the road or it might be a week. But all solo travelers need to avoid loneliness along the ride.
So when you’re planning your next solo trip take these ideas into consideration these ways to avoid loneliness on the road.
By Beniamino Bortoli.
Get out of your comfort zone & start conversations with locals
It’s quite possible that you’ll stand out as a traveler when on the road. That may mean locals don’t start up the conversations with you, but that doesn’t mean you can get one started. Whether you’re fluent in the language or need some practice, break out of your comfort zone and jump into a conversation nearby. You might just have a quick exchange or you might make a new friend.
Take a seat at the bar or communal table
It’s easy to sit down at a table and eat by yourself. Or grab a drink with a book in your hand. But when you do that it’s unlikely you’ll have a chance to meet or talk with anyone. So instead take a seat at a bar or a communal space. Here you might chat with the bartender, another traveler or some locals who sit next to you.
Use shared transportation
Many places you can travel from city to city with others. This might be taking a bus or a shared taxi. These can be another chance to meet other travelers. Plus, it will normally save you a few bucks.

Find out where to meet travelers & expats
Most cities around the globe have places where travelers and expats get together. It might be a coffee shop or a bar. You can normally find the spots with a quick search online. Especially if your skills in the local language are weak, meeting other travelers can be a great way to connect and make friends on the road.
Take a group tour or sign up for a group activity
When traveling you might not want to hop on a tour or sign up for a group activity. When you’re trying to experience a country yourself sometimes these can feel “inauthentic”. While this can be true there are also great ones out there. Plus, they are a chance to have a shared experience during your travels. They can be day trip tours, walking tours, cooking classes or guided hikes to give you a few ideas.
Find a meet-up or a travel buddy
If meeting people on the road isn’t coming organically think about making a plan to meet people. There are some great ways to do this. Check out meetup.com or look for Facebook events in the area.
Soon you’ll be able to connect with locals and travelers in the area directly with our upcoming travel buddy app. If you want to be the first to hear about the launch, sign up here.
Bring along a good book or two
You might not always want to interact with others but you can get lost in a good book. If you’re anything like me this can help you avoid loneliness along the road as well. Think about packing an e-reader where you can bring along a few books without having to take up much room in your luggage.

Start with a few ideas and find the one that combines different ideas. If you can’t quite find a spot everyone loves, pick one this time and agree on the second choice for your next trip.
Reserve Your Accommodations
You can work out most details last minute but make sure you get accommodations early, especially if you have a large group. Decide what type of accommodation you want. Hotel, campground or apartment/house. With large groups renting a whole apartment or house can be much more affordable. You might even find some fun amenities to enjoy such as a sauna or pool. Consider looking at Airbnb for the perfect place.

What do you most want to do on your girls getaway? Find a few activities to enjoy as a group and also options for people to head out on their own. Don’t try to pack too much in and find some time to relax as well.
As for food on your trip, talk about what your budget is and how much you want to eat out. If you’re renting an apartment or house, think of eating a few meals in. This allows you to save money and a few friends to show off their cooking skills.
Assign Roles & Responsibilities
Whether it’s booking things, bringing things, planning meals or whatnot, assign clear roles to your travel buddies. Try and give people roles they will enjoy and are good at. This allows everyone to have a hand in planning the trip and also means no one is handling the brunt of the responsibility.

Whether you’re traveling with long time friends or some ladies you barely know, girls getaways can cement your friendship, creating memories you’ll never forget. Solo Female Travel In Cuba – What You Need to Know
One of our top travel trends for 2017 is exploring Cuba. For Americans, the opportunities to travel in Cuba are just opening up. For others around the world, it is believed to be the last chance to visit the country before tourism takes hold and makes significant changes.
Whether you want to see the beautiful beaches and landscapes, walk through the busy bright streets of Havana, listen to live music and watch salsa in Trinidad, or smoke a cigar on the plantation in Vinales, there are so many reasons to take a trip to Cuba.
For many, especially Americans, Cuba has been a mystery. This can bring many concerns on traveling there. If you’re a solo female traveler and considering taking a trip to Cuba there are a few things you should know.
Getting Around Cuba as a Solo Female Traveler
There are a couple ways to get travel in Cuba. First is private taxis. If you aren’t worried about your budget this is an easy and safe way to get around. It’s about $25 CUC to get from the airport to Central Havana. To get around the island rates are normally over $100. You’ll always want to agree on prices ahead of time and research what they should be.
As you’re traveling alone, it’s nicer to split costs. Thankfully, in Cuba, they have what is called a cCollectivo. A shared taxi, that will take you between cities. An example is between Havana and Trinidad it costs $30, compared to the $150 in a private taxi. If you’re alone it’s a great way to meet other travelers and save on costs. You can book through your casa host or at the hotel tour desks.
Finally, there is the Viazul, the tourist bus. This is an affordable option but takes longer than the collectivo. They run on time and are safe. But from Havana and Trinidad the cost is $25, only $5 less than a collectivo and takes at least 2 hours longer.
Accommodations In Cuba
Cuba has both hotels and guest houses called casa particulars. The hotels can be convenient, but often don’t have the luxury you’re used to expecting for the prices they cost. The casa particulars can ofter as good amenities with only a percentage of the cost, plus you get a chance to live with locals.
The other perk to the casas is they can be booked easily on Airbnb. This means you don’t have to bring cash to pay. Also, you can read reviews of past visitors. As a solo female traveler, this allows you to find an affordable place (often only $20-40 a night) that you feel comfortable staying it. You can read reviews of the host, room, and the area you’ll stay in.
Meeting People As a Solo Traveler
Cuba is filled with lively locals and travelers from all over the world. You can find people to chat with at bars, restaurants, and cafes. If you don’t speak much Spanish though, this can be more of a challenge.
If you’re looking to meet other English speakers a great way to do so is hop on a tour. This can be a day trip or even just a walking tour of the city. Also, taking the collectivos is a nice way to meet fellow travelers.
Another perk with Airbnb is they’ll note if the host speaks English. If they do, you can learn a lot about their experiences and life.
Safety for Solo Female Travelers in Cuba
There is a lot of poverty in Cuba but it is a misconception that it means Cuba is an unsafe place. In many ways, Cuba is a safer place than both tourist destinations and other Latin American countries.
The crime rate in Cuba is instead very low. You won’t have many pickpockets to deal with. And other than people trying to get you to take a taxi or tour at a little higher price, you won’t find too many scams.
As a woman traveling alone, you will likely receive some comments and even be approached by men, but not in an aggressive way. Instead, you’ll be asked to get a taxi or even if you want to go dancing that night. Feel free to ignore or dismiss any of these people, that is unless you want to go dancing.
Is Solo Travel in Cuba Okay? Yes!
If you are thinking about solo travel in Cuba don’t let others concern make you hesitate. While you should do your research and need to be aware of your surroundings there is no reason why you shouldn’t take a solo trip to Cuba.
Or if you’re not so sure about traveling solo, find another female traveler to join you on your journey.
Take the chance to explore a country filled with beautiful places, people and culture.

Must Have Safety Tips for Women Solo Travelers
Odds are when you plan your first solo trip you’ll hear a lot about being safe and whether you are sure it’s safe to travel there by yourself. In reality, as long as you’re prepared it’s safe to travel alone just about anywhere in the world.
Much of the intimidation comes from not know what you’ll experience, and while many of the fears are unfounded, you do need to be prepared.
Be A Good Person, Not A Polite One
A simple safety tip for women is being honest to yourself above all else. Especially in touristy places, as a traveler, you’ll always be approached by people trying to sell you something. And as a solo women traveler, you’ll likely be approach by men wanting to chat with you. Ninety-nine percent of the time these people are entirely innocent. At the same time, you don’t have to talk with them if you are at all uncomfortable or just don’t want to.
It’s okay to say no! Get comfortable with it. Make sure you are a good person but don’t be polite just to be polite and put yourself a situation you don’t want to be in.
Don’t Go Too Far Off the Grid
It can be invigorating to be out on your own, and part of the point of traveling solo is to disconnect from your world back home. At the same time, in case something does happen you want to have people know where you are. One of our safety tips for women is don’t fall too far off the Grid.
If you’ve planned ahead, leave an itinerary with a few family or friends. And, touch base from time to time with them, even if it’s just letting them know you’re at a new destination.
Take Care of Yourself
As a solo traveler, you do need to be more alert of your situation. That shouldn’t stop you from enjoying yourself but you do need to be more aware of taking care of yourself.
Knowing your limits is important. Whether that is watching how much and what you drink, ensuring you’re getting enough sleep, or not getting sunburnt. Not only will this keep you safe it will allow you to have more fun.
Trust Your Gut
We have instincts for a reason and while you might be overreacting it’s better than underreacting. When you’re uncomfortable in a situation, trust your gut and get out. At the same time, if you’re comfortable somewhere or with someone trust that as well. You won’t enjoy the experience if you’re paranoid and unable to connect with locals and other travelers.
Be Prepared & Have Fun As A Solo Traveler
When traveling solo, it’s good to prepare a little more than normal. Take a minute to consider these and other safety tips for women. That might mean having a ride to your accommodation when you arrive, buying travel insurance, and knowing enough of the local language to get help when you need it.
At the same time, being prepared will allow you to better enjoy and experience your destination as a solo traveler. So ladies, get out there and explore the world!
Top Tips for Surviving A Long Flight
As travelers, it’s not uncommon to hop on a twelve-hour flight or have a day filled a few shorter flights. Any time you’re spending more than just a handful of hours in the air it’s easy to get cabin fever.
Whether it’s discomfort or boredom that you might encounter, as long as you prepare for the flights it’s much easier to survive a full day in the air.
Make a List of What You Need to Pack
Just as you might make a list for your suitcase, make one for your carry-on bag. It’s easy to overlook what you might need during your time in the air. Whether it’s snacks, a blanket, your toothbrush or what not, you’ll want to have everything you need in an easy to reach spot.
Wear & Pack What You Need to Be Comfortable
It’s a long flight and odds are you won’t know anyone on it. So while you don’t need to be in sweats, you do need to put comfortable above style. Wear an outfit that you know you’ll be comfortable in for the full day. That might be yoga pants and a loose sweater or it might be a cozy maxi-dress.
Also, pack layers and things that help you relax. Will your airline have a blanket for you? If not, get a cheap one you don’t mind losing and squeeze it into your carry-on. Are you planning on sleeping? If so, you won’t want to forget a pillow.
Hydrate & Snack Along the Way
Nowadays, it’s pretty rare to have a solid meal on your flights. Especially, one you’ll enjoy. My answer to this is snacking! It stops me from getting hungry or uncomfortable over the flight and I eat better when I’ve packed my own snacks.
Bring some nuts, veggies, dried fruits, and healthy dips to enjoy during your flight. Snacking throughout the day can also keep you busy when your hands get fidgety.
Drink water, water, and water. Don’t get onto a long flight without bringing your own water and maybe another tasty, but hydrating, drink. And whenever the flight attendants come by say yes to a water or juice. Your body will thank you when you land.
Plan Your Entertainment & Have A Back-Up
What are you going to do with yourself during those hours in the air? Read a book, watch a few movies, or get some work done. Think ahead of time about a few things you’ll do to keep busy.
Plan on having more than you think you need as well. For two reasons. First, you might be less entertained by something than you expected. And second, your original plan might not work. How many times have you counted on WiFi on a plane and it end up not working that day? Or that movie you thought you downloaded actually didn’t?
Also, don’t count on the in-flight entertainment to work. Getting caught flying over the Pacific when their system goes down will drive you nuts if you don’t have something else to entertain you.
Thinking Ahead Helps In Surviving A Long Flight
Above all, the thing you need to survive a long flight is planning ahead. While you don’t need to go overboard; it’s easier to go with the flow on the plane when you’re prepared.
So be sure to make a list, get cozy, pack some snack, and have some fun ready for your next long flight.
