A Woman’s Guide to Hostel Travel

When you’re traveling sometimes the last thing you want to spend money on is your accommodations. Cutting costs on where you’re staying, especially when you know you won’t spend much time there, can allow for traveling longer or more frequently. It can also allow you to splurge on something more important. This is one of the reasons why hostel travel is so popular and a great alternative.

On top of being an affordable option, hostel travel is also a great way to meet other travelers and even get to see more of the local side of the city. Consider staying in a hostel next time you and your travel buddy plan a trip.

If you haven’t given it a try before there are a few things you should know before you take your first hostel travel adventure.

Start With Booking The Right Hostel

Booking the right hostel can make or break your experience. Don’t book the first one you see. Make sure to do your research. First thing is location. How close is it to public transportation and the places to see. Second, is it a safe location. Do research on the neighborhoods in a city and where you should stay. Safety can also include if a place has locked storage and if it matters to you, single sex dorm rooms.

Finally, you’ll want to get a feel for the environment. Does it have a bar and people tend to party late into the night? Or is it a cozy spot with early quiet hours. Both are great but it depends on what you want to experience on your travels. A great way to figure this out is reading the reviews for the spot and do a quick Google search.

Be A Good Roommate

The last thing you want in a hostel is an annoying roommate. So you want to make sure to do your best not to be one. A few things to be aware of are being courteous of sound and light in the dorm room. You might miss that someone is napping in the corner so you don’t want to barge in loudly at any point of the day. Also, don’t turn on the light at night and instead use your phone or a headlamp.

We know you don’t want to get up and move yet but snoozing your alarm in a dorm setting is not okay. Also, avoid bringing anything smelly into the room. That means food and also spraying perfume.

In the bathrooms, do your best to keep the lines short. If it’s a busy time take as quick of a shower as you can and don’t hog the mirror.

Come Prepared

When planning a hostel travel trip you need to bring a few more things than when you’re staying in a hotel or even most Airbnbs. First, bring things that will help you sleep. Pack earplugs and an eye mask.

A portable charger can make or break your phone situation since you might not have an outlet right next to your bed. For security, pack your own lock. Unfortunately, some people do steal things at hostels and even just locking your bag can deter them.

Bringing along a sarong is a great all purpose trick. You can use it as a towel, a blanket, a sheet, or to be more discreet when changing. A travel towel is also good to squeeze into your bag since some hostels charge for towels and they aren’t always a good quality.

Meeting Other Travelers in Your Hostel

Hostel travel is a great way to meet others on the road. If you’re traveling solo and want to meet people considering booking places that have social spaces. This can be an active living space, communal meals, or a hostel bar.

Get yourself a little out of your comfort zone and start up a conversation with someone. Odds are they’re looking to meet people too.

Staying Safe in Hostel Travel

Above all, you want to be sure to feel comfortable during your stay. Consider a female only dorm and if you stay in a co-ed dorm introduce yourself to the other women in the room. If for some reason, there is a person who makes your uncomfortable, no matter for what reason. Go to the front desk and ask to be switched. It doesn’t have to be a big deal but it will make you feel better during your stay.

Get comfortable and explore the amenities. You’ll have a better time over all during your hostel travels.

How To Meet Locals While Traveling

When traveling it can be easier to hit the tourist hot spots. Sticking to what Yelp or the guide book suggests can bring you some great finds, but you’re often only exploring the first layer of what a city has to offer. One of the best ways to get more out of your experience is to meet locals while traveling. This might be long term travelers, expats, or locals who’ve grown up in the city.

Some places this is easy, especially if you’re somewhere that speaks your language. But wherever you’re visiting here are some tips to help you meet locals while traveling.

Stay With Locals

Nowadays, it’s easy to not just meet but stay with locals while you’re traveling. It’s also easy to do safely since most sites offer ways to review different accommodations. If you’re looking for your own room or even an apartment, Airbnb reviews will give you an idea of how involved a host is with guests. You can also find out if they speak your language.

Another way to meet locals while traveling is trying Couchsurfing. It’s a cheap way to travel and get more involved with the local community. If you’re looking for a woman’s only network consider Wanderful’s homesharing network, where all hosts are verified by the network. How to meet locals while traveling. Research Expat Hot Spots

A great way to start connecting with locals while traveling is through the expat community. This is also a great way to meet people who know the city but also speak your language. Doing some online research can help you find out which cafes, bars, and other places you can find the expat community. They’ll often be involved with locals who’ve lived in an area their own lives and help you get to know the area better. How to meet locals while traveling. Join A Local Event Or Meet Up

Another way to research where to meet locals while traveling is finding what events locals are attending. Check out Facebook for suggested events near you. Or pop over to MeetUp.com where you might find some locals trying out activities you’d enjoy.

Eat With Some Locals

Just like staying with locals there are now ways to eat with locals when you’re traveling. Whether you go to someone’s home and they cook for you and a group, or they help guide you around the city, the crowd sharing economy is a great way to get to know a city better. How to Be a Healthy Traveler on the Road

When you travel frequently or for long stretches it’s very easy to break the healthy habits you have at home. It’s important to try and be a healthy traveler. This can make traveling harder on your body and so you feel like you’re dragging on your trips. And likely even worse when you get back home.

For women travelers, it can be even more important to stay healthy as it allows us to stay alert on the road. Give these easy tips on being a healthy traveler a try on your next trip.

Stay Active By Walking, Hiking, & Exploring

While you might not get in as many workouts in while traveling as you do at home a good way to stay a healthy traveler is making activity a part of your travels. Find a way to walk a few miles each day. That might be exploring the city or it might be finding a hiking route each day. If you walk a ton you can keep of some of those extra calories you’re likely to pick up. What you need to know to be a healthy traveler. Tricks for being healthy when you travel.

Drink More Water & Less Alcohol

Pack a reusable water bottle and keep filling it up. Even set goals for how many you need to go through in a day. Staying hydrated can be a make or break of staying healthy while you travel. Drinking enough water will help you sleep better, eat better, avoid getting sick, and so much more.

On the flip side of that, the more alcohol you drink the worse all the above will get. That doesn’t mean you can’t drink but either only have a drink or two. Or skip drinking altogether a couple nights. This also helps you save money as you travel.

Commit To Eating At Least One Healthy Meal A Day

For many of us, traveling is just as much about the food as it is about anything else. It’s easy to make excuses when you travel to stop eating well. While it’s okay to allow that part of the time make sure to keep it’s limited. Consider having a healthy breakfast each day or a salad each lunch. This will help your entire body feeling better. Also instead of eating heavy consider keeping healthy snacks in your bag. What you need to know to be a healthy traveler. Tricks for being healthy when you travel.

Make Sure To Get Enough Sleep To Be A Healthy Traveler

It’s so easy to run at one hundred percent for twenty-four hours when you’re traveling. It might feel like a way to get more in but you’ll quickly end up too exhausted to enjoy anything at all. Set a good sleep schedule for when you travel. For some people, that’s going to bed early so you can start fresh in the a.m. For the night owls out there it might be letting yourself sleep in. Try and get in 6-8 hours each night get the most out of your trip.

Find An Anywhere Workout That Works For You

If you do Pilates or swim for a workout at home you might not be able to easily do that on the road. At the same time, there are plenty of workouts you can do just about anywhere, even your hotel room. Consider learning enough about yoga or Pilates mat workouts where you can do them right on your floor. Or other core exercises you can do in your room. While running isn’t everyone’s favorite thing it can be done just about anywhere and a great way to explore the city as a healthy traveler. What you need to know to be a healthy traveler. Tips For Women to Pack Your Carry-On Like A Pro

Whether you’re packing for a weekend getaway or two weeks abroad it’s often easiest to get around if all you have is your carry-on luggage. But the truth is that for us women it’s often a little complicated to make that work. The limitation of space is one thing but being able to pack all the toiletries you need for two weeks without maxing out the liquid limitations can be a challenge.

Even though it can be more work to fit make carrying on work it makes traveling so much easier. So put a little more effort into your packing prep and learn how to carry-on like a pro.

Use Packing Cubes To Fit More & Stay Organized

You’ll always want to fit as much as you can when you’re traveling. You also don’t want your suitcase to explode every time you open it. Packing cubes are a great way to accomplish both these goals. You can greatly increase your space by rolling your clothes into these little cubes, like these personal favorites from eBags, and then squeezing just those few bags into your suitcase.

You can also separate things by needs. Keep work clothes separate from casual so you know where to find what you need. Work out clothes from your undies. Or whatever system works for you. Especially if you have more than one stop along the way. Packing cubes are the way to go when packing a carry-on like a pro.

Pack Solid Toiletries Where You Can

We all agree the liquid restrictions for carry-ons suck. But they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. So how do you make the most of them? Work on transitioning typical liquid toiletries to solids. This isn’t a science project but how you shop for your travel sized products. Did you know you can get stick sunblock and bug spray? They work just as well but don’t count in your liquids.

A few other ones to give a try are bar soap and bar shampoo. For your facewash bring along cleansing cloths instead. You can’t swap everything for a solid but dig into what you can which will make room for that perfume you want to bring or extra hair product.

Plan a Mix & Match Wardrobe

A great way to carry-on like a pro is to plan your wardrobe ahead of time. This doesn’t mean that you need to pick out an outfit for each day or event but it does me you plan how items can go together. A great way to save space in your suitcase is to pack things with more than one purpose. A tip for doing this is making sure everything you pack matches. You only need one jacket or sweater or a pair of pants if they go with all your other pieces. Come up with a color palette that works for you for your trip to help make everything you pack multipurpose.

Plan with Your Travel Buddy Ahead of Time

Are you traveling with a friend, family member, or new travel buddy? If so talk to them ahead of time about what they are packing. You won’t want to share everything but do you really need two hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons? Or can you share a face wash and some shampoo? Think about what times you can share and swap to make room for more space in your suitcase. Packing tips for how to carry-on like a pro. What all women need to know as minimalist travelers.

Maximize Your Personal Item

Don’t forget that part of packing a carry-on like a pro is remembering you have your personal item as well. You won’t just want to carry a tiny purse on and give up room for a few more things. Instead, bring a larger tote that will let you fit a thing or two you want to squeeze in. This way you might be able to pack that extra pair of shoes you know you’ll want to have on the trip.

What to do as a solo female traveler on the road to avoid loneliness. Tips for meetings others while traveling.
,

7 Ways to Avoid Loneliness When Traveling Solo

Solo travel can be a great experience, but no matter who you are you’ll want to connect with people along the way. It depends on your personality, you might get a little lonely or feel disconnected after a day on the road or it might be a week. But all solo travelers need to avoid loneliness along the ride.

So when you’re planning your next solo trip take these ideas into consideration these ways to avoid loneliness on the road.

Get out of your comfort zone & start conversations with locals

It’s quite possible that you’ll stand out as a traveler when on the road. That may mean locals don’t start up the conversations with you, but that doesn’t mean you can get one started. Whether you’re fluent in the language or need some practice, break out of your comfort zone and jump into a conversation nearby. You might just have a quick exchange or you might make a new friend.

Take a seat at the bar or communal table

It’s easy to sit down at a table and eat by yourself. Or grab a drink with a book in your hand. But when you do that it’s unlikely you’ll have a chance to meet or talk with anyone. So instead take a seat at a bar or a communal space. Here you might chat with the bartender, another traveler or some locals who sit next to you.

Use shared transportation

Many places you can travel from city to city with others. This might be taking a bus or a shared taxi. These can be another chance to meet other travelers. Plus, it will normally save you a few bucks.

Find out where to meet travelers & expats

Most cities around the globe have places where travelers and expats get together. It might be a coffee shop or a bar. You can normally find the spots with a quick search online. Especially if your skills in the local language are weak, meeting other travelers can be a great way to connect and make friends on the road.

Take a group tour or sign up for a group activity

When traveling you might not want to hop on a tour or sign up for a group activity. When you’re trying to experience a country yourself sometimes these can feel “inauthentic”. While this can be true there are also great ones out there. Plus, they are a chance to have a shared experience during your travels. They can be day trip tours, walking tours, cooking classes or guided hikes to give you a few ideas. What to do as a solo female traveler on the road to avoid loneliness.
